I bought a set of star cookie cutters several years ago to make a star cookie tree and never got round to using them, so I thought instead of making a gingerbread house this year I would make a tree! Anne and I are still holding up our Christmas gingerbread baking day and it didn’t disappoint this year, can’t think of a more fun way to spent a day than baking with a friend! Last weekend Becky came up to stay for a long Christmassy/girly weekend! Of course, the weekend involved plenty of baking. I saw the recipe for this in delicious. magazine last year and really wanted to try it but never got round to it so when I saw it again this year I thought it would make a good pudding for Friday night as well as being suitable to have with tea/coffee. Last weekend was another cross country race and that gave me another excuse to try out a recipe I haven’t done before and experiment with the decorating. I chose stem ginger cupcake as I wanted a flavour that would be warming in this cold weather, also I hadn’t made them before so it was good to tick off another recipe from the long list! I struggled a bit to think of something to theme the cupcakes with as this time of year seems to be quite uneventful, unlike Christmas. So I chose to make some cows and daisies that could incorporate a subtle red and yellow theme – by using red and yellow centers for the daisies – Serpentine running club colours. A few months ago my friend Monika asked if I would be able to make an owl Birthday cake for her husband Aaron. I did a bit of research and found a few owl cake ideas which I sent over. The majority of ideas were cartoon like owls, probably more appropriate for a kids Birthday cake. But I managed to find a realistic barn owl cake too which looked amazing, but I honestly had no idea if I could make a cake like that! So I sent Monika the links to the various cakes, I was pretty sure the realistic owl would be her favourite, and it was. Despite it looking impossibly hard to make, I really hoped she would chose this one as I have never attempted anything like this before and was keen to give it a go, but I honestly had no idea where to start! Click here to find out how I made this cute little owl!

gingerbread mittens

On Thursday night last week there was an amber warning in place for heavy snowfall overnight and all day Friday. It was also bitterly cold. Despite turning the heating on and having the fire on as soon as I got home, it still felt cold so I decided that in order to warm the house up a bit more, the best option was to turn the oven on. And if the oven is on then it’s rude not to bake something. So I decided to try out a new recipe for gingerbread biscuits – they keep for ages and they’re perfect dunked into tea. I cut some of it up to build some sledges and then the rest I used to make mittens.

Do you need some mittens to warm up? Yes I do!

gingerbread family

I’ve got so many things to blog about and not enough time! I made these a couple of weeks ago with Becky when she came to stay. I’m having a baking weekend (again) this weekend and I made these (…again!) so I guess it makes sense to blog about these next. I’m baking Christmas presents for people this year and one of the things I’ve decided to make are mini gingerbread men and snowflakes – hopefully I’ll find time this weekend/next week to blog about the other things I’m making. If you want to make some gingerbread biscuits too click here.

jimmy choo shoe box cake

This was the cake which I made to go with Kiri’s cupcake shoes – if you have a pair of shoes, you need a box to go with them. So, for the main cake I made a carrot and ginger cake and disguised it as a Jimmy Choo shoe box. The cake is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book (yes, I’m slowly making my way through all the recipes). It was huge but tasted really good. Click here if you want to keep reading.
