It was our parents 40th wedding anniversary on the 30th July so not surprisingly Em and I decided to make them a cake as a present! Celebrating 40 years of marriage is a wonderful occasion, so it had to be a very special cake for two very special people. Click
Because we had to make the cake in advance we decided to make a fruit cake, but wanted to try something new, this recipe was perfect, combining chocolate and fruit cake. The recipe can be found here. We baked two 7″ cakes and then cut the tops off so they were nice and level – the off cuts tasted amazing!
During my long weekend in Durham we managed to bake the cakes and make all the sugar paste flowers. Then when I got back home over the next couple of weeks I assembled the leave and flowers and sprayed the leaves gold.
I put the marzipan on the cake and then iced it in white sugarpaste. I then used petal dust mixed with gin to form a paste which I painted onto the cake. I built up the layers of brown, then started to add some more colours – some peaches, oranges and reds and finally some gold. Happy ruby wedding anniversary Mum and Dad!
