I was very excited about making the technical challenge for dessert week as my parents were coming to stay this weekend, so it gave us the perfect excuse to make something special! And with 6 portions it meant that Rich and I could try it on Friday night and there would still be 4 for Saturday night, as well as saving a tiny bit for a mini one for Emily. IMG_5134A couple of weeks ago it was my niece Alice’s Christening and I was very excited to be making the cake for her. I’m not managing to fit much baking or cake decorating in at the moment so it was really nice to have a small cake project to work on! Tams asked for something with butterflies, so we looked at loads of designs and decided on the additions of some painted grass and flowers in pinks and purples and a small grey bunny too. It definitely feels like spring has arrived this week with some gorgeous sunshine and lovely warm weather! So I thought I should upload some photos of these pretty cupcakes. I made them a couple of years ago and have made several similar versions since as the flowers are very easy to make and look really good on top of the cupcakes. Click here to see the recipe and how to make the flower.

PB062198.JPGCan’t believe the bake off is over again for another year! It’s been another great series and I’ve really enjoyed watching it. I am quite relieved there are no more technical challenges though! I haven’t enjoyed them as much as previous years as some of them have been a bit obscure and required special equipment which has made trying the recipes at home a bit more challenging. I was tempted to get Rich to have a go at this one on the BBQ, but decided against it! I used the grill and a griddle pan instead. Click here to see how I got on with the final challenge.

I think I must be one of the only people who actually liked blancmange when I was little! So this recipe definitely appealed and sounded very yummy. I had a bit of help from Emily with the biscuits, but it was a tricky one for a toddler to do! Click here to see how we got on.

Before I watched last weeks episode of The Great British Bake Off I was worried that the technical challenge was going to be a bit strange – I’d seen the trailer with a bright green purée! However, after hearing what was in the cake I was excited to make it since I love pistachios.

We’ve had a really busy couple of months with various wedding cakes and visiting friends and family, so I made the most of a quiet 20 mins earlier while Emily was watching Stickman to write about the cupcakes I made for everyone when we visited friends this weekend. The wedding cake I made a couple of weeks ago had 2 tiers of coffee cake in and I tried a Hummingbird recipe that sounded like it would give an amazing coffee hit. The cake was so good that I decided to make some coffee cupcakes for this weekend too. Click here to take a look at the Hummingbird Bakery’s espresso cupcake recipe.
