We were very much looking forward to bread week! We eat a lot of bread in our house, I bake bread anywhere between 2-6 times a week. Up until a few years ago I rarely made bread as Rich didn’t really eat gluten so had had very little bread making experience. But now Rich is eating it again and I am totally addicted to bread making. I had Chloe as my little helper this week, click here to see how we got on.

Last week’s Bake Off final certainly didn’t disappoint! It was so close I really wasn’t sure who was going to win. Rich was very pleased that the technical was something he really likes, so we were looking forward to making these! The girls also love any kind of sweet bread buns, so I knew these would go down well. Click here to see how we got on.

I can’t believe this is the penultimate technical challenge, we’ve had a lot of fun again this year trying them all out. In particular getting to try things I wouldn’t normally choose to make, the recipes always surprise us. This week was no exception, click here to see how I got on.

Oh yes, it’s caramel week! Our favourite flavour! We all love caramel here, whether it’s salted carmel ice cream, cake or in a biscuit bar, it’s a winner. So we weren’t going to pass on this weeks challenge. Click here to see how I got on.

After the success of the malt loaf last week the girls were keen to have a go at making the jammy biscuits after school on Friday. Emily loved watching the GBBO again and is already planning a gingerbread biscuit construction for Christmas! Click here to take a look at our attempt at making jammy biscuits.

Before we start all our Christmas baking I thought I would quickly upload some photos of the cake that Emily made for Rich for his Birthday this year. We all love watching the Great British Bake Off and also enjoy watching An Extra Slice. Rich’s absolute favourite bit is when they show photos of things that other people have had a go at baking, in particular the famous hedgehog cakes. So for his Birthday this year I thought we could make him a hedgehog cake and I would let Emily decorate it all by herself! I was secretly hoping it would be very funny leaving a 4 year old to do it! This week on the Bake Off it was biscuit week. Some of the showstoppers were amazing – I have chickens so I was very tempted to try to create a biscuit Chicken! But I’ve stuck with the technical challenge this week which was fig rolls, something I haven’t had for years.

I was really pleased when I saw what the technical challenge was last week – it’s been ages since I’ve made something like that and I couldn’t wait to try it! The only downside was that it’s pretty big (it’s huge!) and I was on my own for the weekend. Luckily I had a cross-country race and my team mates were more than happy to help me eat it up!

So this is a slight change to the normal ‘Technical Challenge’ which we do each week, and that’s because the last technical challenge was a bit odd. I don’t mind trying something new but I didn’t want to have to buy random spices and moulds which I probably wouldn’t use again, just for the sake of a challenge. The other option was improvise, but given it was spice week, not having the right spices seemed to defeat the purpose. I also didn’t really agree with the challenge – I couldn’t work out what techniques it was testing. So… click here to keep reading

Before I watched last weeks episode of The Great British Bake Off I was worried that the technical challenge was going to be a bit strange – I’d seen the trailer with a bright green purée! However, after hearing what was in the cake I was excited to make it since I love pistachios.
