My Uncle Pe-pe is currently cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End with his brother-in-law Tim. He’s not going at quite the same speed as the Tour de France but then he’s not a cyclist, they’re not having any rest days and they don’t have a support crew following them so they are cycling with all their kit and camping, so he’s doing an amazing job! Rather than just donating, I decided to use a tiny amount of the money I was going to donate (less than £5) to make some cakes to raise a bit more money… and that’s when I came up with these cupcakes.
I tried piping some bikes out of white chocolate so they could be cycling along the road, but it was too hot and whenever I tried to put them on they just kept melting! So I abandoned the bikes and stuck with just the Tour de France jerseys lining the road. I timed it well with the day Chris Froome won his second stage of this year’s Tour de France, retaining the yellow jersey and taking the king of the mountains jersey too.
I made the jerseys by piping coloured white chocolate onto greaseproof paper. For the king of the mountains polka dot jerseys, I piped the red dots first and then the white chocolate over the top. After they had set in the fridge, I took them off the paper and placed them on the cupcakes with the side that had been on the greaseproof paper facing upwards.
The cupcakes were plain vanilla (recipe here) and I decorated them in the same way that I did for the racing car cupcakes.
P.S. If you’re feeling generous, you can donate to the great charities he’s chosen via the JustGiving websites below:
