My best friend, Nic, asked me a while ago if I could make a cake for her dad, Clive, for his 60th birthday. Of course, I said yes! His favourite cake of mine is the bunny cake I made at Easter this year (it’s also my favourite) but Nic wanted something golf related. So after a few scribbles I came up with this one…
I decided to make a “6” and a “0” and make a bridge to join them, with a river running underneath. I wanted to include a bunker and a green with a flag with 60 in the hole, so I put the green in the middle of the “0” cake and the bunker in the middle of the “6” cake. Since Clive liked the bunny cake so much I wanted to make it similar by having several golfers on the cake doing silly things. There had to be one “normal” golfer actually attempting to play golf though….
Next I decided that I wanted to make a golfer who was drunk/sunbathing/sleeping in the bunker….
I wanted a golfer on the green blowing a ball into the hole, but I think he possibly looked more like he was checking out the lie of the green…
The last golfer I made was finishing balls out the stream…
Making the figures was actually the easy bit – the hot weather meant making and icing the cake was harder than usual. Trying to put fondant icing onto warm buttercream was not easy – it was impossible to smooth properly so I used some darker green icing to make some tufts of grass to cover up some of the cracks which I couldn’t smooth.
Happy 60th birthday Clive!
