On Sunday it was the Bupa Great Birmingham Run. One of the guys I work with, Adam, was running so I decided to make some cupcakes to raise some money for the charity he was running for – Birmingham Children’s Hospital. I was going to make some running themed cupcakes but his nickname in the office is “Sherlock” (because he looks a bit like Benedict Cumberbatch), so I decided to make some Sherlock Holmes cupcakes.
I piped all the silhouettes by hand using black royal icing and a no. 2 Wilton nozzle. Providing you’ve got a picture to copy and a steady hand, I find it’s not too hard. However, another technique, which would work if you were doing larger picture, is to pipe the silhouette onto a piece of greaseproof paper, tracing over the outline of the shape. You can then flip this over and press it onto the rolled out fondant icing and it will print onto it. This won’t work if you’ve got something detailed because the shape gets splodged (is that a word??) a bit, but if you made the silhouettes larger than I did then it should work.
