After a lot of indecisiveness (usually the case if I haven’t already got a plan about what I’m making!) I decided to make some rubber duck cupcakes for the cake trolley the other week. I had plenty of sugar paste left from cakes I’ve made over the last few weeks so some simple decorations to use it up seemed like a good option.
Once I’d worked out how to make the ducks they were pretty quick. Rather than making 24 ducks, I saved a bit of time by making 12 ducks and 12 diving ducks (just the tails and some feet showing). I made a cone shape for the bodies and I pressed my thumb into the fat end (to create a dip for the head to sit in) and then shaped the tail upwards. For the tail up ducks I cut the fat end of the body off to push them into the cakes slightly and added some feet using 2 small cones of orange icing with 2 dents in the fat end (made using the blunt side of a knife). The heads were just a round ball of yellow and I stuck on a couple of white circle and painted black dots in the middle for the eyes. The beaks were made out of a triangle of icing which I cut in half most of the way through and then just shaped slightly.
