Cheese Cake
Every year for Tom’s birthday I make him a cake. This year it’s a bit late since we were on holiday but I promised I’d make him something to take to work when we got back. It took a while to come up with an idea but I went through a list of things Tom likes and cakes I’ve made, and realised I’ve never made him a cheese-related cake.
I did a search for cheese cake and not surprisingly most of the cakes were cheesecakes. However, after changing the search a bit I found some cakes looking like cheeses. Tom’s favourite was a round of cheese with a slice cut out and Remy (from Ratatouille) stood inside holding a piece of cheese. I’d only given myself yesterday evening to bake and decorate the cake so I ended up changing the design slightly. Remy was taking too long to make so 3 little mice (plus a bottom!) were far quicker.
The best thing about this cake is that you get to cut it up and keep a slice! In theory you could use the whole cake on the board, but why do that when you can keep a slice to try – that never happens! It was also a good cake to make in a hurry – no need to smooth the icing to make sure there are no lumps and bumps since you need a few to give it character!
I had a bit of black icing left over from a Halloween cake I made a couple of weeks ago. It hadn’t dried out so was perfect for covering the board to make it look like a slate board. I used some white dust mixed with a bit of vodka to paint the writing on and make it look like chalk! The cake (a chocolate caramel cake with chocolate ganache buttercream) was covered in 2 shades of yellow – the small slice was slightly brighter to make it look like Edam ( I used a ball tool to make the “holes”) and the larger one I made duller (I added a bit of brown). The rind of the Edam was just red icing. For the larger cheese, I used brown petal dust followed by white to make it look slightly mouldy! Finally, the mice were just cones of grey icing with a few details added.
