Over the last few months, lots of my friends have had babies. Having just had a baby myself 4 months ago, I know how crazy the first few days and weeks can be. I love making presents for people and a box of cupcakes seemed perfect for any new parents – especially useful to have something to offer any visitors or for those days when things are so chaotic that all you manage to eat is a cupcake for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
I got the idea for these cupcakes from a picture on Pinterest and was looking for a design that I could do in stages when I had time while Emily was having a nap.
The decorations were pretty easy. I started by colouring some sugar paste in blue and pink. I then rolled this out to about 3mm thick and cut out some frilly edged circles and carefully put them on a non-stick mat to dry out. I also did the same with some white sugar paste.
I then coloured some sugar paste peach and rolled some balls for the heads and smaller balls for the feet. I used a cocktail stick to make holes for the eyes. For the dummies I used a small amount of blue or pink sugar paste, rolled a little ball, dabbed a bit of water onto the peach ball of sugar paste and pressed the ball into place, I used a Wilton size 2 round nozzle to make a circular indentation. For the hair, I coloured a small amount of sugarpaste blonde and brown and rolled a very thin line, curling it slightly and secured it in place on top of the head with a dab of water.
Once all the bases and other bits had dried out, I assembled the babies. I rolled out some pink sugar paste to about 2mm thick and I used the same sized frilly edge cutter to cut some circles. I lightly dampened the circle all the way round the edge and placed a head on and some feet on the opposite edge. I then folded up the edges in between to meet in the middle and gently pressed them together, ensuring they were also stuck well to the head and feet. I lightly dampened one of the dried out white circles in a line down the middle and placed the baby on top and left to dry. I continued with the rest using white based for pink or blue babies and pink or blue bases for white babies.
Once they were dry, I baked some cupcakes, piped a small swirl of buttercream on top and pressed the baby cake topped gently into the buttercream. The toppers are very easy to do and can be made weeks in advance to dry out and then use when you’re ready, perfect cake decorating to fit in around looking after a baby!
