It was Dad’s 70th Birthday in the middle of August and he treated us all to a wonderful week away. Em and I discussed various ideas for his Birthday cake design and finally settled on a lawn mowing themed cake as Dad absolutely loves his lawn and mowing beautiful stripes into it! It was always something that we joked about as did his friends and neighbours too! Click here to find out more about this cake.

I took ideas from various lawn mowing cakes that I had seen and added a few personal touches too. I liked the idea of painting a number 70 on the bottom of the lawn mower. And also using terracotta coloured bricks to go around the lawn just like in Mum and Dad’s garden.

I had to make sure the cake was quite stable as it was going to be in the car for an hour or so, so I didn’t want to make anything that was too tall or could get knocked or broken on the journey. Luckily it all survived!

We went out for an amazing roast lunch at a local pub, then home for tea and cake a bit later on – we were so full of roast beef that we had to wait a bit! The cake was a very soft fruity rum soaked fruit cake with just about every type of dried fruit in. It was really delicious and lovely and moist. Dad loved the cake and we all had such a wonderful family holiday celebrating his 70th Birthday.

Such a wonderful cake and present for your dad. Thank you for sharing.
