On Sunday we finally got around to having Chloe’s Baptism, 2.5 years later than planned due to covid etc. But it was worth the wait, we had a wonderful weekend with family and Godparents. I wanted to make a really special cake and loved the cake I made for my niece Alice, so I decided to make something similar. Click here to see some more photos of this magical cake.

I’d seen some pictures of toadstools with curly tops made from clay and thought that they would be fun to create in sugar paste. They were quite tricky to do, especially the large one. I made the brown tops first and let them harden with polystyrene balls underneath to help keep their shape. I then made the stalks with a thick florist wire inserted to help keep them upright once they were put onto the cake. I then made the underneath part and glued the stem into place with edible glue.

I made loads of other small flowers, butterflies and toadstools in various shades of purple, pink and peach. I wanted the colours to be soft and autumnal. I made a spiced apple cake with caramel buttercream and soured cream chocolate ganache, lovely autumnal flavours. The recipe can be found here. I painted the grass around the bottom of the cakes before they were stacked. I stared with some soft yellows, orange and browns, then added the greens over the top. I lost track of how many hours I spent making all the decorations, baking, icing the cake and then assembling and painting it all, but it was worth every second! Chloe loved it and couldn’t wait to show everyone her special cake after her Christening.

Absolutely Awesome!
