It was Mum’s 70th Birthday just before Christmas and she rarely has a Birthday cake as her Birthday is so close to Christmas. But as it was her 70th we had to do something special, so along with all the other Birthday surprises I made her an illusion cake based on a casserole pot and veg as cooking is still one of her favourite things to do. I used the veg in my fridge as a guide to look at. They were all made using sugar florist paste which I coloured to roughly the right colour and then once dried I used various coloured petal dusts to bring the veg to life.

The wooden chopping board and spoon were brushed with some watered down food colouring to give a more realistic wood effect. I inserted some wire into the ends of the handles and let it dry before I secured them in place using edible glue. The cake was a fruit cake covered with marzipan and then iced with white icing to look like a stew pot.

I used an edible pen to write the beef stew recipe onto the dried icing before using some edible glue to secure it in pace on top of the lid. We had a wonderful few days celebrating Mum’s Birthday, with a surprise visit from Em and Mark and then a surprise family lunch at ours followed by the cake! Happy 70th Birthday Mum!
