Last week Em and I went on our second 6 day Cake Decorating Course at Squires Kitchen International, this time it was an extended techniques course, building on what we had already learnt on the previous course. We had another amazing week doing what we both love.
Day 1:
We were taught some new techniques using sugarpaste and used these to create a mood board. We used the same combination of colours for each technique and experimented with various shapes and patterns. We had a go at quilling, weaving, enamelling, stencilling with sugar paste and royal icing to name a few.
Day 2:
On the 2nd day, we coated our fruit cakes in another layer of royal icing and then learned how to make a collar. The designs were very intricate compared to anything we had done before and required a lot of concentration to pipe all the tiny straight lines. We also started making some overlays and butterflies to decorate our cakes with.
Day 3:
We continued with our royal icing, finishing our butterflies and decorating the sides of our cakes with an intricate embroidery design. We then had the tricky job of placing the collars around our cakes, we had to be extremely careful not to break them. Once these were on, we finished the decoration with the overlays and butterflies to complete our stunning creations.
Day 4:
On day 4 we decorated a heart shaped cake dummy. We designed our cakes and tried to incorporate some of the new techniques we had learned on day 1.
Neither of us had decorated a heart shaped cake before, so it was great to do something a bit different.
Day 5:
On Friday we were taught how to make classic figures. Normally Em and I make cartoon like figures from sugarpaste, but this time we were being taught to make more realistic ones. We decided to have a bit of fun and make each other!
Day 6:
On the final day of the course, we learned how to make peonies. These large flowers are stunning once they are assembled. But as each petal is made on a separate wire they are very time consuming, but worth the effort.
Hopefully we will soon be putting our new skills to good use, so keep an eye out on this blog for more Gloverly Cupcakes creations coming soon…
