Last year before Christmas I made some cute little penguins to go on top of cupcakes. They were pretty quick to make so given I only had an hour left before I wanted to go to bed last night, and I had 11 undecorated cupcakes, I decided to try making some robins in the same way!
I made these in almost exactly the same way as the penguins. I made an egg shape out of brown icing. I cut out 2 wings using a small petal cutter and stuck them on using a little bit of water. I cut a circle out of red icing, using the wide end of a small piping nozzle and stuck that on. I made a small come out of yellow icing and stuck it to the body at the top of the red circle in the middle. I then used one of my modelling tools to poke a couple of holes for eyes. The most time consuming part was the hat. I cut out a circle of red icing using the wide end of a large piping nozzle. I folded it in half and then rolled it to form a cone and pressed the edges together to join them (and then smoothed over the join – if you put it at the back of the hat you don’t really see it anyway). I used a strip cutter to make the white band and then made a little white ball to stick on top.
They were a bit rushed (the main aim of the evening was to make some physic themed cupcakes) so they weren’t all the same size but once I put them on the cupcakes you couldn’t really tell. I’ve baked a couple of other Christmas things so hopefully plenty more ideas will be coming your way shortly – watch this space!
