It’s been a while since Em and added something new to our page, but we’ve still been busy doing plenty of baking! A couple of weeks ago my friends James and Amelia got married and I was thrilled to be asked to make their wedding cake for them. It’s great to be asked to make a cake that’s completely different from anything I’ve done before, so I was very excited when James and Amelia found a photo of a silhouette wedding cake that they really liked. I love the idea of the story on each tier of the cake. I adapted the original design so the figures looked slightly more like James and Amelia – the bride needed to have shorter hair. I used grease proof paper to trace the design and then adapted it and cut out the design. I rolled out some black sugar florist paste and lay the template on top and used a craft scalpel to cut out the intricate design before carefully turning it over, brushing lightly with edible glue, then lifted it up to stick it onto the cake. I positioned them so the figures would be standing on top of the black ribbon.
I also made some little back flowers and butterflies to go around the bottom tier. Once the bottom tier was on the cake board, I used watered down black food colouring to paint some grass and flowers around the edge. I also added a few details to the butterflies once they had been stuck on. I haven’t done any painting on sugar paste before, but I will definitely be doing it again as I loved doing it and the effect was really good.
I then put the dowling rods in and secured the 2nd tier on top and began painting the leaves onto the tree with the watered down black food colouring. I kept the top tier separate and assembled it at the venue as the cake was too tall to travel with it on. Luckily the cake travelled well and was quick to assemble at the venue. We had a wonderful time at the wedding, congratulations to James and Amelia!
