Just over a month ago it was Emily’s 4th Birthday! And being a typical 4 year old she wanted a unicorn cake. I’d never made one before but knew that it wouldn’t be long before I had a request for one! I decided to surprise Emily by making the cake rainbow coloured inside, click
The cake took an entire day to bake as I only have one 7″ round cake tin, so I made all the mixture, divided it into 9 bowls and coloured each one, then began baking them all. Luckily because each layer was quite thin it didn’t take too long to bake and cool. Once baked, I assembled the cake with layers of vanilla buttercream and raspberry jam. Then it was time to decorate it.
I covered it in vanilla butter cream, it needed 2 coats and the dark colours still showed through a bit, but I ran out of time to make more buttercream, so had to put up with a few dark lines showing. I then made 2 different turquoise coloured buttercreams and 2 pink coloured ones and then divided these into several piping bags all with different shaped nozzles on. It was then a case of piping swirls of different shapes all over till I had managed to create the mane of the unicorn. Then I added some sugar balls and sprinkles and some turquoise coils that I had made using sugar florists paste. I then stuck the ears and horn in place (I didn’t make these!) and used some sugar paste to make the eyes.
I’m not a massive unicorn cake fan, but Emily loved it and really enjoyed the surprise when we cut into it! I love a theme so used the rainbow idea for the rest of the food and made rainbow pizza, jellies, fruit skewers and chocolate dipped strawberries too!
