At the end of October it was Emily’s 5th Birthday, so time to have some fun making her a super special cake. Emily loves to plan things (no idea where she gets that from!) and luckily once she has an idea she generally doesn’t change her mind. This year she really wanted a giant toadstool cake with some fairies and very specifically the toadstool needed to be red with white spots and a pointed one not a flatter round one. I did a few sketches of how the cake was going to look and took some inspiration from various designs I had seen on Pinterest. I also managed to incorporate a few of the smaller toadstools and green decorations that I had saved from her 1st Birthday cake. I made all the decorations several weeks ago so they were nice and hard by the time I came to make the cake. I made mini toadstools, green vines, lollipops, flowers, pebbles and 2 fairies.

The day before Emily’s Birthday my parents kindly looked after the girls so I could get the cake done and it did take the entire day to do! Probably the most stressful cake I’ve ever made! I bought a special antigravity cake stand from Lakeland but it wasn’t stable enough to put the huge cake on top, so Rich came up with some ideas to add some reinforcement using a kitchen roll tube, scrunched up paper then all covered with Rice Krispie treats, followed by ganache before covering with fondant. Luckily once reinforced I was able to put the cake on top which I had shaped, ganached and covered with red fondant.

Before I placed the toadstool on top I decorated the board with all the decorations and added the red and white spotted ribbon around the board. Once the cake was in place I carefully put some wire through the purple fairy’s wings and inserted the wired under the cake board so she was free to move if you touched her.

We revealed the cake to Emily when she came downstairs on her Birthday and she absolutely loved it! It was such a shame that due to all the COVID restrictions she couldn’t have a party this year, so we just had my parents over and then two days later her best friend from next door.
