We are all super excited in our house that the GBBO is back on and we couldn’t wait for it to get started! Once again we have done plenty of baking over the last year but struggled to find the time to upload any of it, so thanks to the GBBO I’ll be making a bit more of an effort over the next few months. Emily and Chloe absolutely loved watching the first episode and were very keen to help out, click here to see how we got on.

Em and I absolutely loved malt loaf when we were kids and I remember regularly having it as a snack with butter on. I haven’t had it for years then when we went up to stay with Em and Mark over the summer, Em made a banana malt loaf, which was delicious, so last weekend I made one too, little did I know it was also going to be this weeks technical challenge! It was a very easy recipe to follow and the girls helped with all the weighing out and mixing.

We also decided to make our own butter which was a bit of fun! I half filled some plastic bottles with some double cream and let the girls run around shaking them! We opened them half way through to see the cream was whipped and had stopped making a noise when it was shaken, then to Emily’s amazement all of a sudden it sounded all watery and she could suddenly see the butter had separated in the bottle! We strained it and tried some, the girls couldn’t stop eating it, it was so amazingly soft and creamy.

We had the malt loaf for breakfast on Saturday morning, using a recipe I’d seen in either Sainsbury’s or Olive magazine, I can’t remember which – take two slices of malt loaf, butter on one side of each slice (this will be the outside). Then on one of the non buttered side lay either chocolate buttons or thin pieces of chocolate, then place the other slice buttered side up. Place in a frying pan for 3-4 mins on each side, till nicely toasted on the outside and the chocolate in the middle has melted. It was a very yummy weekend treat! We will definitely be adding malt loaf to our list of things we regularly like to bake, perfect for snacks and it keeps well too – not that cake lasts long in our house!
