Yey, GBBO is back! We all enjoyed watching the first episode and getting to know this years bakers. I hadn’t made a red velvet cake for ages, so I was really looking forward to making this and sharing it over the weekend with friends and family. The girls were also very enthusiastic to have a go at the technical challenges again. Click here to see how we got on.

The only red velvet recipe I have tried is the Hummingbird Bakery one, but Paul’s is very similar, although the buttercream is slightly different. The recipe can be found here. The girls helped weigh things out and they did some mixing too, they insisted that they would be very careful when mixing the red food colouring to a paste with the cocoa powder, luckily the mess was minimal! I think I made more mess with the crumbs trying to level the cake!

Emily helped with spreading the buttercream between the layers. And Chloe mostly helped by licking the spatula and other spoons! The buttercream tasted amazing, it was so light and creamy. The girls really enjoyed the cake too, especially seeing their tongues turn red!

I hate Red Velvet cake. It is always sickly sweet. After this post, I am thinking I might try it again. Just tell me this, “Is it worth the calories?”
Yes it’s definitely worth the calories! Super light and slightly chocolatey and the icing is really good too.
I tried it, but mine didn’t rise well and was slightly dry. It did go over a couple of minutes in the oven as I forgot to get it out right away while making the icing. I also found that there wasn’t quite enough icing.
I might make it again, but I am not quite sure why it didn’t rise that well. The cakes were too large to be counted as one layer by themselves but hardly large enough to slice into two parts to form a total of six decent layers. In fact, after trying my first slice of cake, some of the layers looked awesome. I managed to mangle the bottom layer and the one just above it though.
I added about a tablespoon of finely ground up powdered coffee because I couldn’t taste any chocolate in the batter.
Mine didn’t look all that great. It was a nearly naked cake on the sides. I am not even a good amateur baker. Mostly, I am looking for flavor LOL.
