Bird and Blossom Cupcakes

IMG_3596Last week on Friday we got home from work to find a bowl full of eggs fresh on our doorstep, from our neighbours. I decided that in return for the eggs, I would bake them some cupcakes. I’ve had these pinned on Pinterest for ages and decided that they were the perfect cakes to make – spring-like and quick to make. Click here to find out how to make them.

Easter Chick Cake

IMG_3564I made an Easter cake again this year for a charity raffle at work. Unfortunately I was ill the week before so didn’t have as much time as last year and had to choose a simpler design. Sometimes simple is best but I think I still prefer the cake I made last year. The cake this year was being raffled on Wednesday so I made a Simnel cake from the BBC website that would last until the Easter weekend. Sheep Cupcakes

IMG_3590A few weeks ago I made some cupcakes to take to the Leeds office when I went down for the day. I was planning on making them again to take to work but I was too busy/tired and then got ill. I didn’t get any good photos of them so I realised that if I wanted to put them on the blog I’d have to make them again… what a shame! Click here to make these sheep… Baaaaa!

P1220325A.jpgIt must be time for some Easter baking! This year I haven’t had time to bake a big cake, so I decided to make a couple of batches of cupcakes –  some for our family trip this weekend and some for the local baby group I go to on a Thursday morning. I hadn’t managed to go shopping this week, so I had to pick a flavour that had only store cupboard ingredients in – I really struggled, but found that Earl Grey tea cupcakes were the same as the vanilla ones and the only extra ingredients were a few tea bags. It was my Birthday last week, so it was time to bake myself a cake and try out some new recipes. I really don’t mind making my own Birthday cake and it gave me the opportunity to try something new. Click here to see which recipe I chose.

Baby Cupcakes

Over the last few months, lots of my friends have had babies. Having just had a baby myself 4 months ago, I know how crazy the first few days and weeks can be. I love making presents for people and a box of cupcakes seemed perfect for any new parents – especially useful to have something to offer any visitors or for those days when things are so chaotic that all you manage to eat is a cupcake for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Click here to see how these cakes are made.

Hardware Cookies

IMG_3427In 1957 our Grandpa, Alf Denning, opened a hardware shop on the Bristol Road in Northfield, Birmingham. It was called Denning’s Hardware and sold everything from a single nail, to wheelbarrows. As kids we often used to visit the shop when we went up to Birmingham to see our grandparents. I remember running round the shop with the sticker gun and using it to “price” ourselves! Click here to see what tools are for sale!

2015: Our year of baking…

Alice In Wonderland Pocket Watch Macarons

If you follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter you’ll probably have seen some baking over the last 12 months that hasn’t made it onto the blog. Sometimes we spend so much time baking that it’s hard to find the time to blog about our creations, especially since we also work…. Click here to find out what else we got up to last year.

Santa in Bed Cake

Earlier in the year I made an Easter cake and Halloween cake for charity raffles in the office. I decided that I would offer to make a Christmas cake. I had no idea how I was going to decorate, but for some reason I decided that when I got home after my Christmas party it was a good time to start decorating it! After a quick search on Pinterest I found a cake that looked quite quick to make so I based it on that. Gingerbread Bird Box

Making a gingerbread house has become an annual event with my friend Anne. Each year we seem to spend more time talking and drinking tea and less time making and decorating our gingerbread! It’s great fun and hopefully we’ll be doing it for many more years to come. This year I decided to make a bird box and keep the colours simple with just white Royal icing with a few red highlights.
