I was really pleased when I saw what the technical challenge was last week – it’s been ages since I’ve made something like that and I couldn’t wait to try it! The only downside was that it’s pretty big (it’s huge!) and I was on my own for the weekend. Luckily I had a cross-country race and my team mates were more than happy to help me eat it up!
There was nothing too challenging about this bake – apart from the mirror glaze. It was time consuming, there were a lot of steps and the ingredients list was lengthy and expensive – but when you look at each stage individually, it wasn’t as bad as I expected. There was a lot of making stuff, leaving it to cool down and then chilling in various stages in the freezer – I made it around having dinner and didn’t stick to the time limit (I had to do the mirror glaze the next morning since I misread the ingredients and only bought one pack of gelatine) but I can imagine that the contestants were very pushed for time!
Every part of this was delicious, apart from the mirror glaze – I love the effect it gives but even using less gelatine than the recipe suggested, I thought it was rubbery. If I was to make it again I’d probably make double the amount of mirror glaze (mine didn’t quite cover the one side – maybe being quicker pouring it would help!) but only use half the amount of gelatine. This would be perfect for a dessert for a dinner party – it’s a definite showstopper! The recipe is here.
