Owl Cupcakes

P1160022A

Since discovering that we have tawny owls living in the woods near us, I have found a new love for these gorgeous birds. They make the most amazing mystical “twit twoo” sound which we hear most evenings. So it seems very appropriate to blog about these cute little owl cupcakes. Click here to find out how to make them.

W0125_433Just over seven weeks ago I made this wedding cake for one of best and oldest friends, Nic. It was very different to anything I’d made before – no fondant icing or fancy decorations, just cake and buttercream. Nic and Alex wanted the cake to be the dessert so they chose red velvet (which is also Alex’s favourite cake flavour!). Had I known that the wedding was going to be in a marquee on the hottest day of the year, I probably would have tried to suggest a different cake! Click here to keep reading.

20131210-074258.jpg One of the girls in the office, Simran, loves the Hummingbird Bakery and always goes when she’s in London. Her favourite flavour cupcake/the one she always has is this one: red velvet with a cream cheese frosting. So I promised that I would, at some point, make some red velvet cupcakes to bring into the office. I eventually got round to making them last summer. And it’s taken me just as long to get round to blogging about them. If you can’t wait any longer for a red velvet cupcake click here.

20131209-185226.jpg Just under a year ago my sister got engaged. I was extremely excited – not just because there was going to be a wedding, but also because I was going to get to make the cake! We made a deal a while ago that rather than making our own cake, we would make each other’s. Click here to keep reading.

20130904-114556.jpgIt’s been a while since I last did a post. It’s not that I haven’t baked anything, it’s more the fact that Tom came home – despite the fact he seems to be working constantly I suddenly have less free time! Anyway, I made this cake last weekend, with my sister. It was for our great Aunt’s 90th birthday – happy birthday Auntie Joan! We didn’t want to do just a plain sponge so the cake was lemon & poppy seed with a raspberry curd filling and a lemon buttercream – it was very light and delicious. Click here to keep reading.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALast year I made my friend Ro a birthday cake. It was huge. So, this year when she invited me to her 30th birthday celebrations, I asked her if I could make her a giant birthday cake again. Her response was “that is possibly the silliest question I’ve ever heard”. In the end though, it wasn’t as big as the previous year – I think it would have been hard to beat it! red nose cupcakeI wanted to make some cupcakes which looked amazing for the bake off in the office yesterday to enter into the showstopper category. I’d looked through my Hello Cupcake book on Monday night but nothing jumped out so I asked Bertie in the office for ideas – she said I should make “the bear”… I think she was getting mixed up with Children in Need! But it did give me the idea of making Red Noses. This year’s noses are pretty cool and even have feet (they’re meant to be “di-nose-saurs”) but I decided making them 100% identical would take too long given I had other stuff to bake too, so I took the simplest one and based it on that. red nose jammy bodgerLast week I saw an email about a cake sale in the office today for Comic Relief so sent an email to say I’d bake something to sell. I then discovered there was a bake off too so I thought if I was going to bake something to sell I might as well enter it into the competition. There were various categories to enter so I decided I would make cupcakes and enter the cupcake and showstopper categories and then if I had time I would bake something for the biscuit category. I managed to finish work slightly early so I had plenty of time while the cupcakes were cooling. Choosing which biscuits to make was pretty easy – for Red Nose Day there’s only one type of biscuit which is suitable… Red Nose Jammy Bodgers!

jimmy choo shoe box cake

This was the cake which I made to go with Kiri’s cupcake shoes – if you have a pair of shoes, you need a box to go with them. So, for the main cake I made a carrot and ginger cake and disguised it as a Jimmy Choo shoe box. The cake is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book (yes, I’m slowly making my way through all the recipes). It was huge but tasted really good. Click here if you want to keep reading.

Shoe Cupcakes

DSCF8369Where do I start? This weekend my sister Becky came up to stay and we had a non-stop baking weekend so I’ve got so many things to blog about. I’m going to start with these shoes. Our first baking project was to make a cake for Kiri’s birthday party on Saturday night. Kiri LOVES shoes so when she asked me to make a birthday cake for her I knew exactly what I would make. I’d seen a photo of cupcake shoes on this website ages ago and I’d been looking for a reason to make them – Kiri’s birthday was the perfect occasion. Fancy some edible Jimmy Choos?
