Several months before Chloe’s 3rd Birthday she suddenly announced one morning that she wanted a panda Birthday cake. She’s always loved pandas, just like Emily and her favourite cuddly toy is a panda too. But we hadn’t really talked about Birthday cakes and I don’t think she knew that Emily had a panda cake for her 3rd Birthday too! She was also specific and wanted clouds and turquoise balloons on her cake. Click here to see what I made.

Just over a month ago it was Emily’s 3rd Birthday. Being a typical 3 year old she was changing her mind every day about what kind of party and cake she wanted, slightly tricky when trying to plan things! Her favourite cuddly toy is her panda and so when I suggested that she had a panda themed party and cake, she seemed very excited and the idea stuck, phew! She takes after both her Aunties with her love of pandas. She asked for the cake to have a Mummy panda, a Daddy panda and and Emily panda on as well as some bamboo, so I did a bit of research and came up with a design. We’ve had a really busy couple of months with various wedding cakes and visiting friends and family, so I made the most of a quiet 20 mins earlier while Emily was watching Stickman to write about the cupcakes I made for everyone when we visited friends this weekend. The wedding cake I made a couple of weeks ago had 2 tiers of coffee cake in and I tried a Hummingbird recipe that sounded like it would give an amazing coffee hit. It’s been a while since Em and added something new to our page, but we’ve still been busy doing plenty of baking! A couple of weeks ago my friends James and Amelia got married and I was thrilled to be asked to make their wedding cake for them. It’s great to be asked to make a cake that’s completely different from anything I’ve done before, so I was very excited when James and Amelia found a photo of a silhouette wedding cake that they really liked. I have always loved pandas. There’s something about them that makes them adorable. Many years ago my mum made me a panda cake for my birthday but despite my love of both pandas and cakes I’ve never made a panda cake myself. I decided it was time to change that. So this year I decided to make myself a panda cake for my birthday. My birthday was on a Monday and the weekend before I’d been trying out different red velvet cakes with my friend Nic to find the best recipe to use for her wedding cake, so it seemed sensible to use the left over cakes to create my own birthday cake. With hindsight, this probably wasn’t the best idea – it’s distressing enough cutting up a panda cake, but when it’s red on the inside… I’m still recovering from the traumatic experience. Keep reading – I promise there are no photos of cut up pandas…

A couple of weeks ago one of the girls I work, Kiri, with left to go on secondment for 6 months. I’m always looking for excuses to make cakes so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to make some “leaving” cupcakes.

On Sunday it was the Bupa Great Birmingham Run. One of the guys I work with, Adam, was running so I decided to make some cupcakes to raise some money for the charity he was running for – Birmingham Children’s Hospital. I was going to make some running themed cupcakes but his nickname in the office is “Sherlock” (because he looks a bit like Benedict Cumberbatch), so I decided to make some Sherlock Holmes cupcakes. This was the cake which I made to go with Kiri’s cupcake shoes – if you have a pair of shoes, you need a box to go with them. So, for the main cake I made a carrot and ginger cake and disguised it as a Jimmy Choo shoe box. The cake is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book (yes, I’m slowly making my way through all the recipes). It was huge but tasted really good. Click here if you want to keep reading.

Where do I start? This weekend my sister Becky came up to stay and we had a non-stop baking weekend so I’ve got so many things to blog about. I’m going to start with these shoes. Our first baking project was to make a cake for Kiri’s birthday party on Saturday night. Kiri LOVES shoes so when she asked me to make a birthday cake for her I knew exactly what I would make. I’d seen a photo of cupcake shoes on this website ages ago and I’d been looking for a reason to make them – Kiri’s birthday was the perfect occasion. Fancy some edible Jimmy Choos?
