Last weekend we had a Reunion/ Christmas get together with our NCT friends, which we offered to host. Baking with a 7 week old baby is challenging, but I was desperate to bake something Christmassy and fun! This week has been a busy cake week. I usually find that if somebody asks me to make a cake, it usually ends up being for a week when I’m already making one. This week I’ve made two very different cakes, but both had a football theme. The first one I made was this one – a Sunderland football shirt.

I love a bit of piping, so when I managed to convince my manager at work that I should make his wedding cake, I was really pleased to find out that the design they wanted was very rustic and two tiers would be completely covered in piped swirls. Click here to keep reading about this rustic cake.

Since discovering that we have tawny owls living in the woods near us, I have found a new love for these gorgeous birds. They make the most amazing mystical “twit twoo” sound which we hear most evenings. So it seems very appropriate to blog about these cute little owl cupcakes. Click here to find out how to make them.

Just over seven weeks ago I made this wedding cake for one of best and oldest friends, Nic. It was very different to anything I’d made before – no fondant icing or fancy decorations, just cake and buttercream. Nic and Alex wanted the cake to be the dessert so they chose red velvet (which is also Alex’s favourite cake flavour!). Had I known that the wedding was going to be in a marquee on the hottest day of the year, I probably would have tried to suggest a different cake! Click here to keep reading.

4 years ago two of my old house mates got engaged, they called me up to tell me the exciting news and asked if I would like to make their wedding cake. How could I refuse! I’d never made a wedding cake before so when Chloe suggested a design she liked I spent some time getting advise on how to do it, it wasn’t just a straight forward 3 tier cake. I have always loved pandas. There’s something about them that makes them adorable. Many years ago my mum made me a panda cake for my birthday but despite my love of both pandas and cakes I’ve never made a panda cake myself. I decided it was time to change that. So this year I decided to make myself a panda cake for my birthday. My birthday was on a Monday and the weekend before I’d been trying out different red velvet cakes with my friend Nic to find the best recipe to use for her wedding cake, so it seemed sensible to use the left over cakes to create my own birthday cake. With hindsight, this probably wasn’t the best idea – it’s distressing enough cutting up a panda cake, but when it’s red on the inside… I’m still recovering from the traumatic experience.
