photo 4 (2)A couple of weeks ago Aimée, one of my friends from work got married. She asked me/I offered to make her wedding cake. As with most of the other wedding cakes I’ve made, she said she wanted something “simple”. Based on past experience “simple” often doesn’t end up being simple! So I searched on Pinterest for “simple purple wedding cake” and showed a couple to her – surprisingly she picked the simplest one. Click here to keep reading.

Last weekend was my sister-in-laws wedding and I couldn’t have been more excited! When we arrived at my mother-in-laws on Wednesday evening, it felt just like Christmas, with all the excitement and anticipation of the big day. There’s something really special about a family wedding. I was over the moon to be asked to do the cake and when the design was chosen I was really pleased to discover that it was something different to anything I had attempted before.

This week is national cupcake week, possibly the best week of the year! I have been baking lots of cupcakes recently in particular for the hen parties I have been to this month. The 1st of 3 hen parties was for my lovely friend Anna who I met through our running club, she is getting married at the end of the month (look out for the blog about her wedding cake next month). I decided to do something different for her cupcakes rather than making the usual silly rude ones.

W0125_433Just over seven weeks ago I made this wedding cake for one of best and oldest friends, Nic. It was very different to anything I’d made before – no fondant icing or fancy decorations, just cake and buttercream. Nic and Alex wanted the cake to be the dessert so they chose red velvet (which is also Alex’s favourite cake flavour!). Had I known that the wedding was going to be in a marquee on the hottest day of the year, I probably would have tried to suggest a different cake! Click here to keep reading.

IMG_3271.JPG At the moment I’m in the process of moving house. This means that we don’t have any internet yet. I’m therefore slightly restricted with what I can blog about at the moment – I can only post things which I’ve taken photos of on my phone. I was planning on writing my next one on the red velvet wedding cake which I made several weeks ago for one of my best friends, Nic. However, the best photos of it aren’t on my phone so instead here are the cupcakes that I also made for the wedding. Click here to keep reading.

P1170320Every year the company I work for takes part in the Enduro Challenge. This is an endurance relay event where a team of 6 athletes race from Tower to Tower – The Tower of London to The Eiffel Tower. Teams run from London to Dover, swim across the English Channel (in only a swimming costume!) and then cycle from Calais to Paris. Yes, this is an extreme triathlon! I’ve taken part a couple of times and have helped support the race the last few years too. It’s an enormous amount of fun and incredibly hard work and the athletes that take part are thoroughly deserving of plenty of homemade cakes! So it has become a tradition that I supply some home baked goodies, preferably themed for the event. So this year I have been busy baking some sea creature cupcakes.

Want to find out what’s lurking in the English Channel!?

P1170242ABefore I started Gloverly Cupcakes, Becky and I discussed starting a blog with “Sugarplum” in the name. Why? Because it was my nickname when I was younger and it fitted in with the baking theme. I didn’t want to steal the name for a blog on my own, so I came up with Gloverly Cupcakes. Now Becky has joined me we want to keep the Gloverly Cupcakes name, but we also want to have a link to sugarplums. The first step was creating a new logo. The next step was to create a signature bake –

sugar plum cupcakes.

flowers and flutterbiesI like all kinds of baking and cake decorating and I love being asked to make anything, but after 3 minions, 2 pandas, and a sooty cake, it made a nice change to be asked to make some pretty cupcakes. I also like being given the opportunity to come up with the decorations myself – the only instructions I was given for these was that they had to be purple and silver with flowers and butterflies. Perfect! Click here to keep reading.

20131118-202034.jpg At the end of the summer last year, our friends Martin and Jen got engaged. A couple of weeks later I asked if they’d like me to make the wedding cake. Jen said yes and then asked if I would like to be a bridesmaid – I said yes! So three weeks ago I made my first wedding cake. Click here to keep reading.

20130904-114556.jpgIt’s been a while since I last did a post. It’s not that I haven’t baked anything, it’s more the fact that Tom came home – despite the fact he seems to be working constantly I suddenly have less free time! Anyway, I made this cake last weekend, with my sister. It was for our great Aunt’s 90th birthday – happy birthday Auntie Joan! We didn’t want to do just a plain sponge so the cake was lemon & poppy seed with a raspberry curd filling and a lemon buttercream – it was very light and delicious. Click here to keep reading.
