W0125_433Just over seven weeks ago I made this wedding cake for one of best and oldest friends, Nic. It was very different to anything I’d made before – no fondant icing or fancy decorations, just cake and buttercream. Nic and Alex wanted the cake to be the dessert so they chose red velvet (which is also Alex’s favourite cake flavour!). Had I known that the wedding was going to be in a marquee on the hottest day of the year, I probably would have tried to suggest a different cake! Click here to keep reading.

P1130184I love making cakes and biscuits to give to people as a present, so when I saw this idea on Pinterest I couldn’t resist! I thought it was perfect to use as a gift to say thank you when we stayed with some friends and their two girls for the weekend. If you want to find out how to make a picture out of cupcakes, click here…

photo 1The advantage of doing a blog with somebody else is that you can remind/encourage each other to keep it up. Over the last 6 months my blogging has been very irregular (and infrequent at times) but Becky and I have said that we’re going to remind each other to write a post each week. So here’s my post for the week – look out for Becky’s later this week.

20140806-210130-75690138.jpg Things have been slightly crazy recently, hence the lack of blog posts. We’re in the process of moving to Newcastle! A couple of weeks ago I left the job I’ve had for the past 7 years. I used to bake fairly regularly for the office (most of the comments in my leaving card were cake related!) and on several occasions I made cakes for others when they left. However, I’d never worked out what I’d make for my own leaving cakes. It took me a while to work out what to make but eventually I settled on these!

Who ate the cookies from the cookie jar?

Toblerone Cookies

toblerone cookiesThe last week or so has been chock-a-block with baking. I’ve lost count of how many large cakes I’ve made. But before I add them to my blog I thought I’d share a recipe with you, while I can still remember what the ingredients are! Click here to keep reading…

Mars Bar Cupcakes

20140215-205717.jpg Last weekend I told Tom that I’d make something for him to take to hockey. However, just over an hour before he was due to leave I realised I hadn’t made anything. Ooops. So I decided to see if it was possible to bake and decorate some cupcakes in an hour. The answer was yes… just! Click here to keep reading.

hazelnut macarons I remember looking around my house before I bought it and thinking that the oven was probably rubbish – it looked as old as me. However, after four and half years of baking in it, I can honestly say I wouldn’t change it… even if somebody offered me a brand new top of the range oven. After all the hard work it’s done for me over the last four and half years, I decided it was time to give it a really good clean. And by that, I mean going as far as taking the glass out the door and leaving it to soak so I could get every last little mark off it. After about 2 and a half hours it looked almost as good as new – or as close as I could get – so I decided that I would test out the “new” oven and bake some macarons. Click here to keep reading.

20131210-074258.jpg One of the girls in the office, Simran, loves the Hummingbird Bakery and always goes when she’s in London. Her favourite flavour cupcake/the one she always has is this one: red velvet with a cream cheese frosting. So I promised that I would, at some point, make some red velvet cupcakes to bring into the office. I eventually got round to making them last summer. And it’s taken me just as long to get round to blogging about them. If you can’t wait any longer for a red velvet cupcake click here.

20131217-214310.jpg I love baking things which look pretty. However, no matter how pretty you make something it still has to taste good – at the end of the day it’s food and you’ve made it to be eaten. It can be easy to decorate something with loads of icing to make it look amazing but all that does is make it taste sweet. If possible, I would much rather decorate a cake or biscuit with something that adds to the flavour rather than masks it with sugar. Do you want to make something that tastes as good as it looks?

20131209-185226.jpg Just under a year ago my sister got engaged. I was extremely excited – not just because there was going to be a wedding, but also because I was going to get to make the cake! We made a deal a while ago that rather than making our own cake, we would make each other’s. Click here to keep reading.
