Hardware Cookies

IMG_3427In 1957 our Grandpa, Alf Denning, opened a hardware shop on the Bristol Road in Northfield, Birmingham. It was called Denning’s Hardware and sold everything from a single nail, to wheelbarrows. As kids we often used to visit the shop when we went up to Birmingham to see our grandparents. I remember running round the shop with the sticker gun and using it to “price” ourselves! Click here to see what tools are for sale!

Gingerbread Bird Box

Making a gingerbread house has become an annual event with my friend Anne. Each year we seem to spend more time talking and drinking tea and less time making and decorating our gingerbread! It’s great fun and hopefully we’ll be doing it for many more years to come. This year I decided to make a bird box and keep the colours simple with just white Royal icing with a few red highlights. Walnut Biscuits with Blackberry and White Chocolate Ganache Filling

Last year was a bumper year for blackberries, I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful countryside in Kent and plenty of hedgerows filled with blackberries. I think I picked around 20kg last year and really enjoyed trying all sorts of recipes to use them up. I’ve been out a couple of times this year so it’s time to start making some goodies from all of my pickings. I found a recipe for walnut biscuits and adapted it to sandwich the biscuits together with a yummy blackberry and white chocolate ganache. Click here to try this lovely recipe.

Caramel Cookies

IMG_3067The other week I realised it had been a while since I’d baked for the office so I decided I should bake something to take in. I wanted to make something quick and simple, which only needed store cupboard ingredients since I didn’t want to go out to the supermarket, so I decided to make some cookies. After a flick through some of my recipe books I came across these in the Hairy Bikers Big Book of Baking. Despite having to make the caramel to go in them, they’re straightforward (and quick) to make. Need a quick sugar fix?

This year I really wanted to practise my piping skills, so I decided that rather than making a conventional gingerbread house I would take my inspiration from Eastern Europe. Cookie Monster Macarons

20140806-210130-75690138.jpg Things have been slightly crazy recently, hence the lack of blog posts. We’re in the process of moving to Newcastle! A couple of weeks ago I left the job I’ve had for the past 7 years. I used to bake fairly regularly for the office (most of the comments in my leaving card were cake related!) and on several occasions I made cakes for others when they left. However, I’d never worked out what I’d make for my own leaving cakes. It took me a while to work out what to make but eventually I settled on these!
