Panda Cake

I have always loved pandas. There’s something about them that makes them adorable. Many years ago my mum made me a panda cake for my birthday but despite my love of both pandas and cakes I’ve never made a panda cake myself. I decided it was time to change that. So this year I decided to make myself a panda cake for my birthday. My birthday was on a Monday and the weekend before I’d been trying out different red velvet cakes with my friend Nic to find the best recipe to use for her wedding cake, so it seemed sensible to use the left over cakes to create my own birthday cake. With hindsight, this probably wasn’t the best idea – it’s distressing enough cutting up a panda cake, but when it’s red on the inside… I’m still recovering from the traumatic experience. Keep reading – I promise there are no photos of cut up pandas…

20140205-201340.jpg Last weekend was an epic baking weekend – I managed to make four cakes and a batch of cupcakes. I’m still not entirely sure how I fitted it all. Especially since I had a cake disaster – my first one ever. I guess I was due one! I still don’t know what went wrong, but a sponge cake exploded – it was like a volcano. We tried a bit and it tasted like vanilla sponge should so I’m completely baffled. But anyway, back to the minion…

minion cakeI’ve made 3 minion cakes now, and I’m aware my blog is starting to look a bit like it’s been taken over by minions, but it turns out that everyone loves a minion cake so I keep getting asked to make them! So here is the third one I made. Minion number four will be created this weekend so I thought I should put up some photos of this one to spread them out a bit… Are you addicted to minions too?!

20140108-200258.jpg Last weekend I got to make another minion cake. I loved the first one I made for Tom’s birthday and really wanted to make another one, so I was pretty excited when he asked if I could make one for somebody he works with. Do you want to meet minion number 2?

20131119-202112.jpg In between making wedding cakes it was Tom’s birthday. He’s been away for the last few years on his birthday so I haven’t been able to make him a birthday cake. Therefore, this year, I wanted to make him a cake which would make up for the last few years. Not much thinking was required – he came back from a recent trip to Universal Studios with a minion water bottle, a minion mug and a set of minion pyjamas for me… so a minion cake it was! 20130904-114556.jpgIt’s been a while since I last did a post. It’s not that I haven’t baked anything, it’s more the fact that Tom came home – despite the fact he seems to be working constantly I suddenly have less free time! Anyway, I made this cake last weekend, with my sister. It was for our great Aunt’s 90th birthday – happy birthday Auntie Joan! We didn’t want to do just a plain sponge so the cake was lemon & poppy seed with a raspberry curd filling and a lemon buttercream – it was very light and delicious. Click here to keep reading.

20130728-195953.jpg My best friend, Nic, asked me a while ago if I could make a cake for her dad, Clive, for his 60th birthday. Of course, I said yes! His favourite cake of mine is the bunny cake I made at Easter this year (it’s also my favourite) but Nic wanted something golf related. So after a few scribbles I came up with this one… click here to keep reading.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERALast year I made my friend Ro a birthday cake. It was huge. So, this year when she invited me to her 30th birthday celebrations, I asked her if I could make her a giant birthday cake again. Her response was “that is possibly the silliest question I’ve ever heard”. In the end though, it wasn’t as big as the previous year – I think it would have been hard to beat it! easter bunny cakeAfter I made a dinosaur cake for David’s son’s birthday, he asked me if I could make an Easter cake. As soon as he said he wanted a silly (rather than serious) cake, I came up with an idea… I loved the style of the drunk robin cake I made at Christmas and decided to make it Easter themed – so instead of drunk robins on a tree trunk, I wanted to make bunnies who’d eaten too many carrots on a raised vegetable bed. The problem is, now I’ve made it, I want to keep it! Click here to keep reading.
