It was my Birthday last week and I can’t think of a better way to spend the day than baking myself a cake! I don’t often get to bake exactly what I want, the cakes I usually do are for customers, so it’s really enjoyable to find a new recipe and experiment with some new designs. I am a peanut butter addict, so when I saw this recipe in Olive magazine, I had to make it! Click here for the scrummy recipe.

First Birthday Cake

I spent most of the weekend in the kitchen. This would be some people’s worst nightmare, but for me it’s a pretty perfect weekend. It was also snowing/sleeting for most of the weekend so being inside was definitely the best place to be. Sunday’s challenge was to make something caramel related for the Sunday Baking Club weekly theme – so I spent most of the day stirring caramel while it thickened, and then waiting for ages for it to cool down (look out for the recipe next week). However, the task for Saturday was very different – making a first birthday cake.

Nine years ago I made Tom a birthday cake. It was the first baking I did while I was at university and the first time I’d baked anything for him. I had to go out to buy cake tins – I even had to call my mum to ask for her standard chocolate cake recipe. However, it was a fairly simple cake – an 8 inch round chocolate cake, sandwiched together with chocolate buttercream and decorated with Smarties. Since then, I’ve always tried to make Tom a cake on his birthday – I even sent him gingerbread when he was in Afghanistan – and each year I try to make something different and better than the previous year.
Last year I made him a Minion.

It’s been a while since a minion has appeared on here so I thought it was about time I posted the last one I made (about 7 months ago now!). This is probably my favourite minion and I’d been waiting for somebody to ask me to make it so I was very excited when my Auntie Sarah asked if I’d be able to make one for my cousin Molly for her birthday. After I’d finished it I was really pleased with it, especially the expression – Ooooo, is that a cupcake?
Transport Cake

Kids birthday cakes are one of my favourite cakes to make, especially when I get to come up with the design myself. As much as I love making pretty wedding cakes or cupcakes, there is something so fun about making bright, bold decorations for kids/novelty cakes – they are simple to make but always look so effective. So I was really pleased when Nadeem asked if I was able to make a transport themed birthday cake for his son Zahi’s second birthday. Want to find out where the train is heading?

In between making wedding cakes it was Tom’s birthday. He’s been away for the last few years on his birthday so I haven’t been able to make him a birthday cake. Therefore, this year, I wanted to make him a cake which would make up for the last few years. Not much thinking was required – he came back from a recent trip to Universal Studios with a minion water bottle, a minion mug and a set of minion pyjamas for me… so a minion cake it was! A few weeks ago at work, David asked if I’d make a cake for his son’s birthday. Given how much he likes cake, my initial thought that it was probably for him rather than his son. And the more he told me, the more I thought that was the case – he asked for the cake to be 2 different flavours, one of which was his favourtite cake (carrot) and he then added that his son doesn’t even really like cake! Apart from specifying the flavour of the cake and saying it had to have dinosaurs on, the rest was up to me. If you want to see the whole cake, keep reading.

At lunch yesterday, I met up with Julia. She wanted to go to WHSmiths to look at cook books that were on offer so I said I’d go with her. She’s a very bad influence on me and pretty much forced me to buy another cook book – ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration… I saw the Green & Black’s Ultimate chocolate cook book with 75% off, asked her if it was any good (since she owns just about every chocolate recipe book), she said yes, so I bought it. I then had the urge to bake something chocolatey. So instead of cleaning/tidying the house yesterday evening before Julia stays tonight and my parents come up for the weekend, I made myself an early birthday cake. I’m sure Julia won’t mind (she’d much rather have a slice of chocolate cake than see a tidy house) and my parents will understand (they know me well enough to realise that I prefer baking to tidying 🙂 If you’re looking for an excuse for not doing the house work, or have an urge to make something really chocolatey, then keep reading.
