I nearly always end up giving people cupcakes or homemade goodies as presents. I quite often make a big batch of cupcakes and freeze them if I know I have things coming up where I might need to take a gift. Then I will make 6 or 12 decorations specifically for the event/friend. I love creating personal decorations. Click here to see some more pics of these cute little elephant cupcakes.
It was Dad’s 70th Birthday in the middle of August and he treated us all to a wonderful week away. Em and I discussed various ideas for his Birthday cake design and finally settled on a lawn mowing themed cake as Dad absolutely loves his lawn and mowing beautiful stripes into it! It was always something that we joked about as did his friends and neighbours too! Click here to find out more about this cake.
Emily turned 7 a week ago so as well as the bake off challenges I have been busy making her cake and decorations. She had a joint Birthday party with two of her best friends this year, it was a gymnastics and trampoline party. So Emily decided she wanted a cake to fit in with the theme of the party and her two friends love gymnastics too. Click here to see this special cake.
Em and Mark finally got married in June this year after several postponements due to Covid, but it was worth the wait! It was such an amazing day and we all have some very special memories of it. As Em made my wedding cake, it was my turn to return the favour and make her cake. Keep reading to find out more about her cake and one of the recipes.
I made these last year for Emily’s Birthday for her to take into school. She wanted something with autumn leaves on and I had seen these on Pinterest and thought I would make some similar. Click here to find out more.
Yey, GBBO is back! We all enjoyed watching the first episode and getting to know this years bakers. I hadn’t made a red velvet cake for ages, so I was really looking forward to making this and sharing it over the weekend with friends and family. The girls were also very enthusiastic to have a go at the technical challenges again. Click here to see how we got on.
Several months before Chloe’s 3rd Birthday she suddenly announced one morning that she wanted a panda Birthday cake. She’s always loved pandas, just like Emily and her favourite cuddly toy is a panda too. But we hadn’t really talked about Birthday cakes and I don’t think she knew that Emily had a panda cake for her 3rd Birthday too! She was also specific and wanted clouds and turquoise balloons on her cake. Click here to see what I made.
Emily was super excited about making rainbow bagels this week, she loves rainbows and her favourite breakfast is bagels! We eat and bake quite a lot of bagels in our house, so this challenge was perfect for us. Click here to see how we got on.
We planned our bagel making around Sunday lunch time, so they would be fresh out of the oven in time for lunch. Paul’s recipe can be found here. The recipe was straight forward and the girls enjoyed kneading the dough, Chloe kept trying to eat it again, can’t imagine it tasted too good! I managed to knead in the food colouring in while Emily and Chloe kneaded some of the other bits of dough, so luckily avoided getting their hands coloured too.
Once it had proved I rolled it out while the girls watched and then Emily did a little bit of helping to roll and twist them. They both stood and watched eagerly while I boiled them before they went in the oven.
The end result was super and we really enjoyed them with some cream cheese on for our lunch, delicious, warm and chewy, they definitely put a smile on our faces!
I love making and baking things to give to people as gifts and biscuits are perfect as they have a longer shelf life than cakes and they tend to travel better too. I bought this elephant cookie cutter a few years ago and it really does make the cutest shaped little elephants, whether it’s for a cake or some biscuits. A couple of weeks ago it was my niece Alice’s Christening and I was very excited to be making the cake for her. I’m not managing to fit much baking or cake decorating in at the moment so it was really nice to have a small cake project to work on! Tams asked for something with butterflies, so we looked at loads of designs and decided on the additions of some painted grass and flowers in pinks and purples and a small grey bunny too.
