20131217-214310.jpg I love baking things which look pretty. However, no matter how pretty you make something it still has to taste good – at the end of the day it’s food and you’ve made it to be eaten. It can be easy to decorate something with loads of icing to make it look amazing but all that does is make it taste sweet. If possible, I would much rather decorate a cake or biscuit with something that adds to the flavour rather than masks it with sugar. Do you want to make something that tastes as good as it looks?

20131215-215412.jpg This weekend, I’ve definitely started to feel Christmassy. Tom was working (again!) so I spent all day yesterday baking and wrapping presents. Today I saw pretty much everyone in the family – first we had a roast at my Auntie Ann’s house with everyone from my mum’s side of the family and then we over to see my Great Auntie Joan who had just arrived from American and most of my dad’s side of the family was there. When I got back I was still feeling festive so I decided to make some Christmas cupcakes. Are you feeling festive?

gingerbread mittens

On Thursday night last week there was an amber warning in place for heavy snowfall overnight and all day Friday. It was also bitterly cold. Despite turning the heating on and having the fire on as soon as I got home, it still felt cold so I decided that in order to warm the house up a bit more, the best option was to turn the oven on. And if the oven is on then it’s rude not to bake something. So I decided to try out a new recipe for gingerbread biscuits – they keep for ages and they’re perfect dunked into tea. I cut some of it up to build some sledges and then the rest I used to make mittens.

Do you need some mittens to warm up? Yes I do!

close up salted caramel profiteroles

Happy New Year! Last night Tom and I decided that we would have a quiet new year’s eve with just the 2 of us – Tom made the cocktails and I made the food. For pudding I made these: salted caramel profiteroles.

I haven’t made profiteroles, or choux pastry, for a while and it wasn’t as tricky as I remember. I made them the night before and then assembled them and made the chocolate sauce just before I served them – I’d had a few cocktails by that point but luckily it was fairly straight forward!

If you want to make some profiteroles, click here.

boozy robin cake

So it’s probably a bit late to actually make a Christmas cake (I made mine about 6 weeks ago and it’s been injected with brandy once a week since then!) and maybe even too late to decorate it. But if you’re feeling ambitious then how about decorating it with drunken robins?! If you want to, here’s how.

family of snowmen

If you make a whole batch of brownies and don’t want to turn them all into reindeer, what do you do with the rest of the brownies? Eat them? Or if you’ve eaten too many already there is another option.  Turn them into snowmen cake pops!

rudolph cake pop and friends

Say hello to Rudolph. And his brothers. When I saw these in several places on the internet I just had to make them! And they looked so cute when they were finished that I could quite easily have gobbled them all up myself. But since they’re meant to be presents for people I had to resist. They did go through quality control a couple of times though, which Tom, in the role of chief taste tester appreciated. Do you want to make Rudolph and his friends too? Yes I do!

gingerbread family

I’ve got so many things to blog about and not enough time! I made these a couple of weeks ago with Becky when she came to stay. I’m having a baking weekend (again) this weekend and I made these (…again!) so I guess it makes sense to blog about these next. I’m baking Christmas presents for people this year and one of the things I’ve decided to make are mini gingerbread men and snowflakes – hopefully I’ll find time this weekend/next week to blog about the other things I’m making. If you want to make some gingerbread biscuits too click here.

reindeer cupcake

Here’s the next creation ticked off my Christmas baking list – Reindeer cupcakes. I saw these in What’s New Cupcake and I wanted to make them straight away, but making them in the middle of summer wouldn’t really have been appropriate. So I had to wait. I’ve actually made them already this year – when my sister came to stay a couple of weeks ago we invited the family over for coffee and cake on Sunday morning so these were one of the things we made then. We even made a gingerbread sleigh and a Santa cupcake to go with it – I didn’t have time to make all of that last night though! Do you want to make Rudolph and his friends?
