I haven’t made white rolls for ages so I was happy to give the technical challenge a go this week (although some of the showstoppers looked amazing so I might have to scoring bread soon!). Click here to keep reading.

This week on the Bake Off it was biscuit week. Some of the showstoppers were amazing – I have chickens so I was very tempted to try to create a biscuit Chicken! But I’ve stuck with the technical challenge this week which was fig rolls, something I haven’t had for years.

It’s that time of year again – ready… steady… bake! As with previous years we’re going to attempt all the technical challenges (assuming that they don’t involve buying random equipment/ingredients). This week was cake week and I was really pleased to see that the technical challenge was exactly that – a technical challenge which tested the bakers ability to make a Genoise sponge and Italian meringue buttercream. A couple of weeks ago it was my niece Alice’s Christening and I was very excited to be making the cake for her. I’m not managing to fit much baking or cake decorating in at the moment so it was really nice to have a small cake project to work on! Tams asked for something with butterflies, so we looked at loads of designs and decided on the additions of some painted grass and flowers in pinks and purples and a small grey bunny too. Over Easter weekend it was our Grandma’s 90th Birthday and to celebrate we had a wonderful family weekend together. It all started with a surprise Birthday lunch for Grandma followed by tea and cake of course! Making cakes for the family is always special, particularly this time as Emma and I were always fascinated by the sugar flowers that Grandma used to make, so it was really lovely to be able to make some for her. We are away for Easter this year as it’s our Grandma’s 90th Birthday, so I thought I’d make an Easter cake a couple of weeks early for a weekend treat when we had friends staying. I loved the sound of this spiced marmalade bundt cake from the Waitrose newspaper a while ago, so thought I would give it a go. I had planned to make an Easter cake last year, but unfortunately ended up spending Easter in hospital with pneumonia, so this year I really wanted to make something special. I always seem to get asked on my Birthday “Are you baking your own cake?” and the answer is always “YES!” I love baking and it’s the one cake a year where I get to do exactly what I want! So this year I made the banoffee cake which was in March’s Olive magazine and chose a design that was simple but elegant. Click here for the scrummy recipe.

The year following the arrival of Emily was a busy year of cake baking for me (although I was too busy to blog and upload any photos, so I’m playing catch up now!), having made lots of new local Mummy friends, I suddenly found myself being asked to make 1st Birthday cakes and Christening cakes! Kids Birthday cakes are always fun to make, full of bright colours and interesting characters and this one was no exception. Click here to see all the details of this 1st Birthday cake.

Emma’s favourite book when we were little was the Hungry Caterpillar and it’s also one of Emily’s favourites too, she knows almost all the words! A couple of years ago I was asked to make a cake for Rich’s Godson Freddie and was very excited about the theme. Click here to see some more pics of this cake and matching cupcakes.

A couple of weeks ago at nursery Emily baked rock cakes, we used to bake them lots when I was little too and they are an old favourite! At the weekend Emily and my Mum also did some baking and made more rock cakes, so thought it was about time I added them on here. Click
