This year I really wanted to practise my piping skills, so I decided that rather than making a conventional gingerbread house I would take my inspiration from Eastern Europe. Some of the gingerbread creations made there are truly incredible and the level of detail is exquisite. Click here to find out how to build a Christmas gingerbread village.

Mince Pies

P1110965
It’s about time we put some mince pies on the blog! If you only bake one thing this Christmas, have a go at these, they really are super, especially when they are warm straight out of the oven with a cup of tea. This recipe is from Josceline Dimbleby. This year I can’t make enough mince pies, I think I have already baked over 60, some are in the freezer ready for Christmas and the rest have been taking into the office as well as having a a few left over for an afternoon snack. Click here to try our favourite recipe.

I love a bit of Christmas baking, last year I worked my way through the cupcake recipes from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book. I love the fruit cake cupcakes, the recipe is light and delicious and still has that lovely boozy fruit cake flavour. I thought these snowmen were pretty cool and as my hubby is a massive marshmallow fan I knew these would be a winner! Click here to find out how to build a snowman cupcake.

Barn Owl Cake

P1170638

A few months ago my friend Monika asked if I would be able to make an owl Birthday cake for her husband Aaron. I did a bit of research and found a few owl cake ideas which I sent over. The majority of ideas were cartoon like owls, probably more appropriate for a kids Birthday cake. But I managed to find a realistic barn owl cake too which looked amazing, but I honestly had no idea if I could make a cake like that! So I sent Monika the links to the various cakes, I was pretty sure the realistic owl would be her favourite, and it was. Despite it looking impossibly hard to make, I really hoped she would chose this one as I have never attempted anything like this before and was keen to give it a go, but I honestly had no idea where to start! Click here to find out how I made this cute little owl!

P1170242ABefore I started Gloverly Cupcakes, Becky and I discussed starting a blog with “Sugarplum” in the name. Why? Because it was my nickname when I was younger and it fitted in with the baking theme. I didn’t want to steal the name for a blog on my own, so I came up with Gloverly Cupcakes. Now Becky has joined me we want to keep the Gloverly Cupcakes name, but we also want to have a link to sugarplums. The first step was creating a new logo. The next step was to create a signature bake –

sugar plum cupcakes.

gingerbread mittens

On Thursday night last week there was an amber warning in place for heavy snowfall overnight and all day Friday. It was also bitterly cold. Despite turning the heating on and having the fire on as soon as I got home, it still felt cold so I decided that in order to warm the house up a bit more, the best option was to turn the oven on. And if the oven is on then it’s rude not to bake something. So I decided to try out a new recipe for gingerbread biscuits – they keep for ages and they’re perfect dunked into tea. I cut some of it up to build some sledges and then the rest I used to make mittens.

Do you need some mittens to warm up? Yes I do!

cinnamon and raisin loaf cakes

After going sledging with Kiri this morning I decided to warm up this afternoon by doing some baking. My neighbours very kindly cleared the 6 inches of snow from my path and doorstep this morning, so I thought I would bake something I could give them as a thank you. Kiri also wanted to bake something so I looked through my cookbooks for ideas and the first book I pulled out was my favourite book – the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days. Since I’ve nearly exhausted all the cupcakes, I decided to look at the other things in the book and came across a recipe for cinnamon and raisin loaf. If you want to have a go at making it keep reading.

boozy robin cake

So it’s probably a bit late to actually make a Christmas cake (I made mine about 6 weeks ago and it’s been injected with brandy once a week since then!) and maybe even too late to decorate it. But if you’re feeling ambitious then how about decorating it with drunken robins?! If you want to, here’s how.

gingerbread family

I’ve got so many things to blog about and not enough time! I made these a couple of weeks ago with Becky when she came to stay. I’m having a baking weekend (again) this weekend and I made these (…again!) so I guess it makes sense to blog about these next. I’m baking Christmas presents for people this year and one of the things I’ve decided to make are mini gingerbread men and snowflakes – hopefully I’ll find time this weekend/next week to blog about the other things I’m making. If you want to make some gingerbread biscuits too click here.

jimmy choo shoe box cake

This was the cake which I made to go with Kiri’s cupcake shoes – if you have a pair of shoes, you need a box to go with them. So, for the main cake I made a carrot and ginger cake and disguised it as a Jimmy Choo shoe box. The cake is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book (yes, I’m slowly making my way through all the recipes). It was huge but tasted really good. Click here if you want to keep reading.
