I can’t believe we are nearly at week 8 on the GBBO already! We had a very dark and rainy Friday afternoon here, so Emily and I decided it was perfect timing to make this weeks technical challenge. And luckily Chloe decided she was exhausted and had a 2.5 hour nap giving us plenty of time to get these done and in the fridge ready to deep fry for pudding as a Friday treat. I was very excited about making the technical challenge for dessert week as my parents were coming to stay this weekend, so it gave us the perfect excuse to make something special! And with 6 portions it meant that Rich and I could try it on Friday night and there would still be 4 for Saturday night, as well as saving a tiny bit for a mini one for Emily. Can’t believe we are up to week 5 already on this years Bake Off! We had a free weekend at home this weekend, so this technical challenge was perfect for pudding on Saturday night. I hadn’t made choux pastry for a long time, so this was a good one to try. Click
We were all away together on a family holiday last week and managed to watch the GBBO together for the first time in a long time! I don’t think any of us were particularly keen to make these having seen the curd cheese being made, but when we looked at the recipe it actually sounded pretty good. So on Sunday afternoon Emily and I had a go at making them. Click here to see how we got on.
I haven’t made white rolls for ages so I was happy to give the technical challenge a go this week (although some of the showstoppers looked amazing so I might have to scoring bread soon!). Click here to keep reading.
This week on the Bake Off it was biscuit week. Some of the showstoppers were amazing – I have chickens so I was very tempted to try to create a biscuit Chicken! But I’ve stuck with the technical challenge this week which was fig rolls, something I haven’t had for years.
It’s that time of year again – ready… steady… bake! As with previous years we’re going to attempt all the technical challenges (assuming that they don’t involve buying random equipment/ingredients). This week was cake week and I was really pleased to see that the technical challenge was exactly that – a technical challenge which tested the bakers ability to make a Genoise sponge and Italian meringue buttercream. A couple of weeks ago it was my niece Alice’s Christening and I was very excited to be making the cake for her. I’m not managing to fit much baking or cake decorating in at the moment so it was really nice to have a small cake project to work on! Tams asked for something with butterflies, so we looked at loads of designs and decided on the additions of some painted grass and flowers in pinks and purples and a small grey bunny too. Over Easter weekend it was our Grandma’s 90th Birthday and to celebrate we had a wonderful family weekend together. It all started with a surprise Birthday lunch for Grandma followed by tea and cake of course! Making cakes for the family is always special, particularly this time as Emma and I were always fascinated by the sugar flowers that Grandma used to make, so it was really lovely to be able to make some for her. We are away for Easter this year as it’s our Grandma’s 90th Birthday, so I thought I’d make an Easter cake a couple of weeks early for a weekend treat when we had friends staying. I loved the sound of this spiced marmalade bundt cake from the Waitrose newspaper a while ago, so thought I would give it a go. I had planned to make an Easter cake last year, but unfortunately ended up spending Easter in hospital with pneumonia, so this year I really wanted to make something special.
