W0125_433Just over seven weeks ago I made this wedding cake for one of best and oldest friends, Nic. It was very different to anything I’d made before – no fondant icing or fancy decorations, just cake and buttercream. Nic and Alex wanted the cake to be the dessert so they chose red velvet (which is also Alex’s favourite cake flavour!). Had I known that the wedding was going to be in a marquee on the hottest day of the year, I probably would have tried to suggest a different cake! Click here to keep reading.

IMG_0937AWe are massive fans of the Great British Bake Off and I keep meaning to have a go at some of the technical challenges to see just how hard they are. So when my parents came to visit and bought along loads of home grown pears I thought I would take the opportunity to challenge my Mum and myself to have a go at baking Paul Hollywood’s mini pear pies. Want to find out who the Glover pear pie champion is?!

P1060277A4 years ago two of my old house mates got engaged, they called me up to tell me the exciting news and asked if I would like to make their wedding cake. How could I refuse! I’d never made a wedding cake before so when Chloe suggested a design she liked I spent some time getting advise on how to do it, it wasn’t just a straight forward 3 tier cake. The cake mimicked the design of her beautiful dress. Click here to see this unusual cake.

P1170320Every year the company I work for takes part in the Enduro Challenge. This is an endurance relay event where a team of 6 athletes race from Tower to Tower – The Tower of London to The Eiffel Tower. Teams run from London to Dover, swim across the English Channel (in only a swimming costume!) and then cycle from Calais to Paris. Yes, this is an extreme triathlon! I’ve taken part a couple of times and have helped support the race the last few years too. It’s an enormous amount of fun and incredibly hard work and the athletes that take part are thoroughly deserving of plenty of homemade cakes! So it has become a tradition that I supply some home baked goodies, preferably themed for the event. So this year I have been busy baking some sea creature cupcakes.

Want to find out what’s lurking in the English Channel!?

P1130184I love making cakes and biscuits to give to people as a present, so when I saw this idea on Pinterest I couldn’t resist! I thought it was perfect to use as a gift to say thank you when we stayed with some friends and their two girls for the weekend. If you want to find out how to make a picture out of cupcakes, click here…

photo 1The advantage of doing a blog with somebody else is that you can remind/encourage each other to keep it up. Over the last 6 months my blogging has been very irregular (and infrequent at times) but Becky and I have said that we’re going to remind each other to write a post each week. So here’s my post for the week – look out for Becky’s later this week.

P1170242ABefore I started Gloverly Cupcakes, Becky and I discussed starting a blog with “Sugarplum” in the name. Why? Because it was my nickname when I was younger and it fitted in with the baking theme. I didn’t want to steal the name for a blog on my own, so I came up with Gloverly Cupcakes. Now Becky has joined me we want to keep the Gloverly Cupcakes name, but we also want to have a link to sugarplums. The first step was creating a new logo. The next step was to create a signature bake –

sugar plum cupcakes.

20140806-210130-75690138.jpg Things have been slightly crazy recently, hence the lack of blog posts. We’re in the process of moving to Newcastle! A couple of weeks ago I left the job I’ve had for the past 7 years. I used to bake fairly regularly for the office (most of the comments in my leaving card were cake related!) and on several occasions I made cakes for others when they left. However, I’d never worked out what I’d make for my own leaving cakes. It took me a while to work out what to make but eventually I settled on these!

Who ate the cookies from the cookie jar?

Toblerone Cookies

Mars Bar Cupcakes

20140215-205717.jpg Last weekend I told Tom that I’d make something for him to take to hockey. However, just over an hour before he was due to leave I realised I hadn’t made anything. Ooops. So I decided to see if it was possible to bake and decorate some cupcakes in an hour. The answer was yes… just! Click here to keep reading.
