This weekend, I’ve definitely started to feel Christmassy. Tom was working (again!) so I spent all day yesterday baking and wrapping presents. Today I saw pretty much everyone in the family – first we had a roast at my Auntie Ann’s house with everyone from my mum’s side of the family and then we over to see my Great Auntie Joan who had just arrived from American and most of my dad’s side of the family was there. When I got back I was still feeling festive so I decided to make some Christmas cupcakes. Are you feeling festive?

Just under a year ago my sister got engaged. I was extremely excited – not just because there was going to be a wedding, but also because I was going to get to make the cake! We made a deal a while ago that rather than making our own cake, we would make each other’s. Click here to keep reading.

In between making wedding cakes it was Tom’s birthday. He’s been away for the last few years on his birthday so I haven’t been able to make him a birthday cake. Therefore, this year, I wanted to make him a cake which would make up for the last few years. Not much thinking was required – he came back from a recent trip to Universal Studios with a minion water bottle, a minion mug and a set of minion pyjamas for me… so a minion cake it was! At the end of the summer last year, our friends Martin and Jen got engaged. A couple of weeks later I asked if they’d like me to make the wedding cake. Jen said yes and then asked if I would like to be a bridesmaid – I said yes! So three weeks ago I made my first wedding cake. Click here to keep reading.

Last weekend it was my sister’s hen do. With the help of her other bridesmaid (and future sister-in-law), I organised a weekend away in a cottage. Apart from the date, we wanted it all to be a complete surprise for her. She’d come up with a long list of ideas but I pointed out to her that we were organising it and not her! However, I wanted her to enjoy the weekend so we did listen to some of her suggestions, one of which was having a theme for the Saturday, which was girly and everyone could get dressed up for. She suggested 1920s but since she’s been to a few 1920s parties before I wanted to do something different. So we decided to do a 1950s American Diner theme – keep reading to find out more!

On Sunday it was the Bupa Great Birmingham Run. One of the guys I work with, Adam, was running so I decided to make some cupcakes to raise some money for the charity he was running for – Birmingham Children’s Hospital. I was going to make some running themed cupcakes but his nickname in the office is “Sherlock” (because he looks a bit like Benedict Cumberbatch), so I decided to make some Sherlock Holmes cupcakes. A few weeks ago I wanted to make some cupcakes to take over to my friend Jen’s for her mini “hen weekend”. They needed to be suitable girly but I didn’t have a huge amount of time to make and decorate them. So I decided to make these – inspired by some my sister made for a hen do! I’m always looking for new ways to decorate cupcakes, and when I came across a photo of these, I decided they were too cute not to make. I was looking for something autumnal and had done various searches on the internet before I discovered them. Finding the ingredients to make them was the trickiest part – I think I had to empty 12 tubes of Smarties before I found enough red ones to make the toadstools and even then I didn’t have enough to make one to go on each cake as planned but I decided that if I went back to the Co-op to buy a third lot of Smarties they might start to ask questions so I left it! Two of the partners in my team at work moved to London earlier this summer, so for their leaving do, their P.A. asked if I could make them some London themed cupcakes. Given I was making quite a lot of them I decided I needed to keep the design simple. London Underground signs seemed like a good choice and I was able to make them in advance. I didn’t decide how I was decorating the chocolate cupcakes until the night I made them! Keep reading if you love London!

It’s been a while since I last did a post. It’s not that I haven’t baked anything, it’s more the fact that Tom came home – despite the fact he seems to be working constantly I suddenly have less free time! Anyway, I made this cake last weekend, with my sister. It was for our great Aunt’s 90th birthday – happy birthday Auntie Joan! We didn’t want to do just a plain sponge so the cake was lemon & poppy seed with a raspberry curd filling and a lemon buttercream – it was very light and delicious. Click here to keep reading.
