My big sister turned 30 last weekend – HAPPY BIRTHDAY BECKY!! I wanted her to a have a really special day and of course, that included making her a birthday cake she would never forget. Like me, she loves baking and decorating cakes so she probably would have liked to make her own, but when I saw a picture of this cake here a while ago I knew straight away that I had to make it for her – she’s a triathlete so what could be more appropriate than a 3 tier triathlon cake?! If she feels that she’s missed out on the baking and decorating, I guess I’ll let her make mine in a couple of years! Click here to keep reading.

Dinosaur Cake

A few weeks ago at work, David asked if I’d make a cake for his son’s birthday. Given how much he likes cake, my initial thought that it was probably for him rather than his son. And the more he told me, the more I thought that was the case – he asked for the cake to be 2 different flavours, one of which was his favourtite cake (carrot) and he then added that his son doesn’t even really like cake! Apart from specifying the flavour of the cake and saying it had to have dinosaurs on, the rest was up to me. If you want to see the whole cake, keep reading.
Gingerbread Mittens (and Sledges)

On Thursday night last week there was an amber warning in place for heavy snowfall overnight and all day Friday. It was also bitterly cold. Despite turning the heating on and having the fire on as soon as I got home, it still felt cold so I decided that in order to warm the house up a bit more, the best option was to turn the oven on. And if the oven is on then it’s rude not to bake something. So I decided to try out a new recipe for gingerbread biscuits – they keep for ages and they’re perfect dunked into tea. I cut some of it up to build some sledges and then the rest I used to make mittens.
Do you need some mittens to warm up? Yes I do!
Dragon Cupcakes

About a year ago I was lacking inspiration for what I could bake one week. For some reason I decided to ask Jamie for ideas. He said I should make “a giant popping candy cake with a dragon on top”. I laughed and said I wanted serious suggestions! But then when I got home, and I realised I didn’t have anything else to do that evening, I thought why not try making a dragon out of icing. After I’d made one I decided it was quite cute so had a go at making another…. and after a couple of nights I had a small family of dragons!

I’ve got so many things to blog about and not enough time! I made these a couple of weeks ago with Becky when she came to stay. I’m having a baking weekend (again) this weekend and I made these (…again!) so I guess it makes sense to blog about these next. I’m baking Christmas presents for people this year and one of the things I’ve decided to make are mini gingerbread men and snowflakes – hopefully I’ll find time this weekend/next week to blog about the other things I’m making. If you want to make some gingerbread biscuits too click here.
Carrot and Ginger Shoebox Cake

This was the cake which I made to go with Kiri’s cupcake shoes – if you have a pair of shoes, you need a box to go with them. So, for the main cake I made a carrot and ginger cake and disguised it as a Jimmy Choo shoe box. The cake is from the Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book (yes, I’m slowly making my way through all the recipes). It was huge but tasted really good. Click here if you want to keep reading.

It’s been a week since I made cupcakes so it’s about time I made some more. However, I’ve been too busy at work 😦 so instead of making some tonight here are some cupcakes which I made almost exactly a year ago…
Chocolate Daisy Cupcakes

The other flavour cupcake which I make fairly regularly is chocolate! Again, my usual recipe is from The Hummingbird Bakery Cake Days book – as I’ve said before, they’re simple to make, they always come out perfectly and I know they taste good! I made these daisy ones for a charity cake sale in the office last week to raise money for Emily’s Big Walk – I always look for excuses to make cakes (especially if it’s for a good cause) so when an email came round about a cake sale I volunteered to make some. If you want to make some too, then click here!
