Last weekend Becky came up to stay for a long Christmassy/girly weekend! Of course, the weekend involved plenty of baking. I saw the recipe for this in delicious. magazine last year and really wanted to try it but never got round to it so when I saw it again this year I thought it would make a good pudding for Friday night as well as being suitable to have with tea/coffee. I can’t believe the Bake Off has finished! So here is the last technical challenge. Becky has had to make the last 3 technical challenges but she’s got a lot of other cakes to make at the moment and I decided I was up to baking again so I agreed to make the final one. Click here to find out how the final challenge went.

I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of this years bake off! One more technical challenge to go. I ended up buying the tin for this weeks challenge – you can never have too many cake tins and I am sure I will use it again as it’s a very pretty shape. It’s been a bit of a crazy week as it was Emily’s 1st Birthday last Thursdays, so I had a very important Birthday cake to make which took priority, so I am only getting round to doing this now. Last weeks challenge had to wait till we got back from Devon earlier this week, so I made this on Wednesday and assembled it on Thursday morning in a bit of a rush while trying to get Emily breakfast and get ready to go out. None of the individual parts were too complicated, but it was very time consuming to make! Click  here to see how I got on.

In case you missed it, the Great British Bake Off started again last week! Becky and I both really enjoyed trying the technical challenges last year so we’ve decided we’ll be doing them again this year. Last year we took it in turns to make them each week but we both decided we wanted to try the technical challenge from cake week – Jaffa Cakes!

I’ve always wanted to have a go at making fondant fancies and a few weeks ago it was my friend Karen’s 30th Birthday and all the food for the party was kids party themed, so this was the perfect opportunity to give them a go. I definitely need a lot more practise as they aren’t the easiest thing to make, but I had a bit of fun trying them out. The party food was great –  I can’t remember the last time I had Skips or cheese and pineapple on sticks – amazing! Click here for the recipe.

Our parents have a bumper crop of plums this year, so I decidedout some new plum recipes. I think this one was from an old Waitrose magazine, it sounded really good and I had all the ingredients in the cupboard, so thought I would give it a go. Click here to try this delicious plum recipe.

I was really excited about patisserie week – I was hoping that the technical challenge would be something pretty and I wasn’t disappointed! Although these involved making various types of icings, which looked complicated and quite different to what I normally make, they turned out to be easier than I expected. When I went to the supermarket earlier I spotted that they had British strawberries. I refuse to buy strawberries unless they’re British since the flavour of non-British ones just isn’t as good, so when I saw these I picked up a couple of punnets. I carried on doing the weekly shop and when I got to the cream section I saw that there was one pot of clotted cream left. So I decided I was going to make some scones for afternoon tea – it was meant to be! Would you like some afternoon tea?

cut giant rolo cake

At lunch yesterday, I met up with Julia. She wanted to go to WHSmiths to look at cook books that were on offer so I said I’d go with her. She’s a very bad influence on me and pretty much forced me to buy another cook book – ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration… I saw the Green & Black’s Ultimate chocolate cook book with 75% off, asked her if it was any good (since she owns just about every chocolate recipe book), she said yes, so I bought it. I then had the urge to bake something chocolatey. So instead of cleaning/tidying the house yesterday evening before Julia stays tonight and my parents come up for the weekend, I made myself an early birthday cake. I’m sure Julia won’t mind (she’d much rather have a slice of chocolate cake than see a tidy house) and my parents will understand (they know me well enough to realise that I prefer baking to tidying 🙂 If you’re looking for an excuse for not doing the house work, or have an urge to make something really chocolatey, then keep reading.
