This week has been a busy cake week. I usually find that if somebody asks me to make a cake, it usually ends up being for a week when I’m already making one. This week I’ve made two very different cakes, but both had a football theme. The first one I made was this one – a Sunderland football shirt.

Last year for Easter Emma and I were back at our parents for a few days, so we thought it was about time we made a mess of Mum’s kitchen and did some baking! We wanted to do a slightly different take on a traditional Simnel cake, and came across this yummy chocolate orange Simnel cake recipe. The decoration was another idea taken from Pinterest. So if you haven’t made a cake yet, this one is lovely and the decoration is fairly simple too. Click here to keep reading…

A few weeks ago it was my 30th birthday! I knew Becky was going to make me an amazing cake for my Alice in Wonderland themed party so I made myself a simple, not decorated, white chocolate and cherry cake for the office. I did however get to make a decorated birthday cake that week for somebody else in the office. Did a dog just walk over the cake?

Last weekend it was Emma’s 30th Birthday party. She had decided on an Alice in Wonderland theme for her party. It was fancy dress too and we had an brilliant afternoon and evening playing silly games and eating plenty of scrummy food. But no Birthday would be complete without a Birthday cake! As Emma made me an amazing surprise cake for my 30th, I had a lot to live up to, so after several months of planning I found a design that was perfect that I could adapt for her cake. I spent most of the weekend in the kitchen. This would be some people’s worst nightmare, but for me it’s a pretty perfect weekend. It was also snowing/sleeting for most of the weekend so being inside was definitely the best place to be. Sunday’s challenge was to make something caramel related for the Sunday Baking Club weekly theme – so I spent most of the day stirring caramel while it thickened, and then waiting for ages for it to cool down (look out for the recipe next week). However, the task for Saturday was very different – making a first birthday cake.

Last year I decided to make a slightly crazy Christmas cake, with lights and everything… and I’m not joking! I had seen a picture of this amazing cake and just couldn’t resist giving it a go. The style of the cake is what I imagine Mr Tumnus’s house looks like from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, so I thought I would to add a lampost too!
