IMG_0925This week has been a busy cake week. I usually find that if somebody asks me to make a cake, it usually ends up being for a week when I’m already making one. This week I’ve made two very different cakes, but both had a football theme. The first one I made was this one – a Sunderland football shirt.

Last year for Easter Emma and I were back at our parents for a few days, so we thought it was about time we made a mess of Mum’s kitchen and did some baking! We wanted to do a slightly different take on a traditional Simnel cake, and came across this yummy chocolate orange Simnel cake recipe. The decoration was another idea taken from Pinterest. So if you haven’t made a cake yet, this one is lovely and the decoration is fairly simple too. Click here to keep reading…

IMG_2944 A few weeks ago it was my 30th birthday! I knew Becky was going to make me an amazing cake for my Alice in Wonderland themed party so I made myself a simple, not decorated, white chocolate and cherry cake for the office. I did however get to make a decorated birthday cake that week for somebody else in the office. Did a dog just walk over the cake?

Last weekend it was Emma’s 30th Birthday party. She had decided on an Alice in Wonderland theme for her party. It was fancy dress too and we had an brilliant afternoon and evening playing silly games and eating plenty of scrummy food. But no Birthday would be complete without a Birthday cake! As Emma made me an amazing surprise cake for my 30th, I had a lot to live up to, so after several months of planning I found a design that was perfect that I could adapt for her cake. IMG_4562I spent most of the weekend in the kitchen. This would be some people’s worst nightmare, but for me it’s a pretty perfect weekend. It was also snowing/sleeting for most of the weekend so being inside was definitely the best place to be. Sunday’s challenge was to make something caramel related for the Sunday Baking Club weekly theme – so I spent most of the day stirring caramel while it thickened, and then waiting for ages for it to cool down (look out for the recipe next week). However, the task for Saturday was very different – making a first birthday cake.

Just before Christmas I was very excited to be asked to be a God Mother and also excited about being asked to do the Christening cake. The top tier of Matt and Beckie’s wedding cake had been stored for a couple of years, so I spent a few weeks feeding it with brandy before decorating it. I love the grey and yellow elephant theme they chose and had been asked to do a similar themed baby shower cake for the week before, you can see the cake here. They also requested some matching cupcakes, read on to find out more about these cute elephant cakes.

P1170242AIf you follow us on Facebook and/or Twitter you’ll probably have seen some baking over the last 12 months that hasn’t made it onto the blog. Sometimes we spend so much time baking that it’s hard to find the time to blog about our creations, especially since we also work. So here is a collection of things we made in 2014 that you might not have seen yet.

Last year I decided to make a slightly crazy Christmas cake, with lights and everything… and I’m not joking! I had seen a picture of this amazing cake and just couldn’t resist giving it a go. The style of the cake is what I imagine Mr Tumnus’s house looks like from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, so I thought I would to add a lampost too! Barn Owl Cake

P1170638

A few months ago my friend Monika asked if I would be able to make an owl Birthday cake for her husband Aaron. I did a bit of research and found a few owl cake ideas which I sent over. The majority of ideas were cartoon like owls, probably more appropriate for a kids Birthday cake. But I managed to find a realistic barn owl cake too which looked amazing, but I honestly had no idea if I could make a cake like that! So I sent Monika the links to the various cakes, I was pretty sure the realistic owl would be her favourite, and it was. Despite it looking impossibly hard to make, I really hoped she would chose this one as I have never attempted anything like this before and was keen to give it a go, but I honestly had no idea where to start! Click here to find out how I made this cute little owl!
