In case you missed it, the Great British Bake Off started again last week! Becky and I both really enjoyed trying the technical challenges last year so we’ve decided we’ll be doing them again this year. Last year we took it in turns to make them each week but we both decided we wanted to try the technical challenge from cake week – Jaffa Cakes!

I have to admit, that like all contestants on the GBBO, I have never made a souffle! I love to eat them, but for some reason, I have never got round to making one, so this week I was actually a bit nervous – especially as you regularly see failed souffles on cookery programmes. Click here to see if I rose to the challenge.

I was really excited about patisserie week – I was hoping that the technical challenge would be something pretty and I wasn’t disappointed! Although these involved making various types of icings, which looked complicated and quite different to what I normally make, they turned out to be easier than I expected. I had my parents coming to visit this weekend as well as a few other friends popping over to visit, so this weeks Bake Off technical challenge was perfect, it meant that I had a yummy cake to offer everyone! I make quite a lot of fruit cakes, so I was keen to try this recipe to see how it compares. I have made my own marzipan a few times, but I have never made my own sugar paste, so this would be another thing to tick off the list. Click here to see how I got on.

I was intrigued about this weeks technical challenge. It didn’t seem to bear any resemblance to anything I’d made in the past. It certainly wasn’t like any pastry recipes I’d tried. I can see why the bakers got confused – it felt like it belonged in bread week rather than pastry week! What to know what a flaouna is?

P1200517I bake quite a lot of gluten-free cakes for my running club as there are several people that follow a gluten-free diet, so I was interested to see what this week challenge would be. When I saw that it was bread, all I could think about were the horrible gluten-free flat breads I had tried to make a few years ago, which were like cardboard! I didn’t think I would ever be making gluten-free bread again… Click here to see how I got on this time round.

FullSizeRenderAt the weekend I decided to give last weeks technical challenge a go. It looked impressive but I couldn’t help thinking that it looked like a pavlova, just constructed in a slightly different way. However, I put my doubts to one side and bought a ridiculous number of eggs so that I could spend an afternoon making a mess in the kitchen. Click here to keep reading.

P1200438On the Great British Bake Off last week, it was bread week. The technical challenge was to make 4 baguettes. I do bake my own bread, but not as often as I would like to and I usually end up making a white, wholemeal or granary loaf for the weekend and to put in the freezer. I bought Paul Hollywoods book ‘How to Bake’ a few months ago and I have made a few things from it, with varying success! So my bread making experience is fairly limited. But I love a challenge and really enjoy trying out new things, so click here to find out how I got on.

Last night, was my last opportunity to try the technical GBBO challenge before this week’s bake off. So, I decided to give it a go. I read through the recipe a few times before I started and it didn’t seem that difficult, just quite time consuming. However, they turned out to be trickier than I thought, even with the full instructions (which seemed half complete to me so I don’t know what the contestants got given)! It’s that time of year again – the Great British Bake Off has started and each Wednesday evening we can look forward to some baking entertainment on TV! Last year we tried to make a few of the technical challenges, but we ran out of time, so this year between the two of us, we are hoping to attempt most of them. This week it was Mary Berry’s frosted walnut layer cake. Click here to see how I got on.
